KURUNJANG Primary School's girls and boys rugby league teams swept away the competition at last year's schools tournament. Last week, they had a look at the prize won by the Melbourne Storm in 2009.
The two teams from Kurunjang each won the state title of the Victorian Primary Schools Association's Billy Slater Shield late in November last year.
Kurunjang won the Melton District Gala Day in boys and girls tackle division in early November and were invited to compete on the state championship day at Elwood Park. The players were from grades 5 and 6.
The National Rugby League trophy is now in possession of NRL premier Melbourne Storm, following its 23-16 grand final win over Parramatta.
At more than 20 kilograms, the trophy itself may have been a bit heavy to hoist over the heads of the kids, but they were no less thrilled to have the league's top prize at their school.
The trophy features a sculpture of the iconic 1963 grand final image where a mud-soaked Norm Provan, of the victorious St George, and Western Suburbs skipper Arthur Simmons share a post-game embrace.
