Superb finish takes colt to glory

16 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
ROCKBANK trainer Bill Galea was successful at Cranbourne on Wednesday with Artiscape/Szarbo colt Ultimate Escape in the Trios Tabaret 3-Y-0 Pace over 2080metres.

Driven by Kilmore-based Damian Wilson, Ultimate Escape from gate six settled a mile from the leaders Courageous Spirit and Sarum Knight, appearing to have little hope of figuring in the finish.

Trailing up Travtiano (one/three) in the final circuit, Ultimate Escape produced a whirlwind finish out wide on turning to defeat Travtiano and Major Player (one/two) in a rate of 2-00.6.

■ Former classy juvenile Bells And Whistles returned to his best when victorious in the Choice Hotels 123400 Pace for C1 class over 2080metres.

With over $76,000 in the bank going into the race, Bells And Whistles - a colt by Courage Under Fire from Our Lisa, trained at Rockbank by Charlie Attard and driven by John Caldow - possied five back in the moving lane before being sent forward to park outside the pacemaker Safe As A Mint with a circuit to travel. Gaining the upper hand on straightening, Bells And Whistles just lasted from the fast-finishing Knight Crusader to give Rockbank the quinella, with Safe As A Mint holding down third in a mile rate of 2-01.

■ Long Forest trainer Andy Gath's most reliable 6-Y-0 Ultimate Falcon/Petticoat Tales gelding Ultimate Deal chalked up his 16th success when victorious in the Imagination Play Claiming Pace over 2150metres at Yarra Valley on Friday.

■ Toolern Vale trainer Mick Caspaney and reinsman neighbour John Justice snared the Choice Hotels Pace for C0 class over 1650metres at Yarra Valley with improving 4-Y-0 Jennas Beach Boy/Bali Hei gelding Indigo Beach.

Given a sweet trip three back in the moving line from gate six, Indigo Beach sprinted sharply three wide approaching the home turn and raced clear on straightening to register his second success in 18 outings, defeating Boston Legal and the disappointing leader Strongbow Lombo in 1-59.6.

■ Melton co-trainers John and Maree Caldow snared the third heat of the VHRSC Provincial Cup for C7 or better class over 2240metres at Tabcorp Park with 6-Y-0 Panorama/Southern Falcon gelding Asafa, much to the delight of owners the Barlow family and partners.

■ Meltonian Danny Mullen was all smiles, when 5-Y-0 Live Or Die/Late Tiffany mare Gemma Bear greeted the judge in the Choice Hotels.Com Pace for C1 class over 1720metres.
