MELTON trainer Brent Lilley combined with Gavin Lang to capture the Bendigo Bank 3-y-0 Pace over 1710 metres at Bray Raceway Ballarat on Tuesday August 31 with Mach Three/Alta Magari gelding Alta Onassis whose recent form had been nothing special.
Settling near last from the extreme draw, Alta Onassis - unwanted in the betting at $13.30 - began a forward move three wide solo at the bell and despite being wide for the rest of the journey, ran home strongly to score over another of the Tonkin team, Hamlett, and Andy Miller.
It was Alta Onassis' first success in 23 outings.
■Veteran Meltonian Graeme (Daddy) Lang was in the winner's stall on two occasions at Lords Raceway Bendigo on Thursday, with home bred Wagon Apollo/Melancholy Star 6-y-0 gelding Star Wagon taking the Tennotrump Back Straight Trotters Handicap for T0 to T2 class over 2150 metres and 4-Y-0 Righteous Hanover/Tanabi mare Tiana Bromac the Bush's Produce Stores Pace for C1 class over the same journey.
Coming from 20 metres, Star Wagon enjoyed a cosy passage mid-field in the moving line, with leaders Pride And Pleasure and Xanderxav cutting at one another through the early stages.
Easing three wide at the bell to trail Cherry Sweet, Star Wagon was taken four wide approaching the home turn and dashed away with a winning break on straightening to win well over Star Gun from last, with Robuchon also coming from a mile back for third.
Tiana Bromac, a half sister to cups class performer Tanabi Bromac, had nothing more than a "stroll in the park" after leading throughout from the pole to coast to the wire in advance of Scented and Mums Little Terror in 2-00.1.
■There were plenty of local winners on Friday with Our Mattjesty (Lance Justice – Jason Hackett), Bob Dilinger (Bill Galea – Damian Wilson) and Dontmekemeangry (Brent Lilley – Gavin Lang) saluting at Yarra Valley, while Palomine (Brent Lilley – Gavin Lang), Vito Vito (Lance Justice) and Kid Coconut (John & Rhys Nicholson) scored at Melton.
