HE'S had ties to Melton for more than two decades, but it's taken until now for Danny Gnjidic to coach the club he considers his local one.
And while Gnjidic brings an impressive resume on field and off to the Phoenix this year, there's one unique challenge the new coach faces - he's not familiar with the lower reaches of the provisional leagues.
After avoiding relegation from provisional 3 north-west last season, the Phoenix will look to build long-term strength on the back of local talent from the club's juniors.
Gnjidic started last season as coach of state league 2 outfit Werribee City, finishing the year with Westgate after a shock mid-season sacking.
He previously coached at state league club Ballarat Red Devils.
Originally planning to sit out this year, Gnjidic was coaxed into the Melton job because he lives in the area and is connected to the junior teams via son Daniel, an under-10 player.
"Without a direct association to the club, I've lived in Melton on and off for the past 20 years," Gnjidic said.
"I've always taken a liking to the club, considered it my local.
"It started off the cuff, but some of the parents in Daniel's team were involved at board level."
Gnjidic said the club's 2011 mid-season revival to climb off the foot of the table was something to be admired.
"Clubs usually fall away in that situation. Off the field, the club is well run and well administered; it gives its coaches a real chance to perform."
Recruiting is not the top priority this off-season. Rather, the focus will be on local players.
"We want to establish a competitive senior team and provide a pathway for some of the more talented juniors.
"My knowledge and network of people in the game hasn't had a lot to do with this (provisional 3) level, so I take this on with enthusiasm, knowing what the club stands for.
"The numbers at training have been good. My focus will be on understanding the reasons our players play the game, and at the same time there will be certain expectations.
"I want to see players committed to their football and training."
Melton Phoenix will play a pre-season tournament starting February 18, with games against Northern Falcons, Epping City and Melbourne Uni.
