Interleague: Ballarat triumphs as forwards find their aim

31 May, 2011 12:00 AM
BALLARAT Football League overcame a goalless opening quarter to defeat Goulburn Valley Football League by 20 points in Saturday's interleague clash at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton.

Ballarat straightened up after an inaccurate start in front of goals to triumph 16.16 (112) to Goulburn Valley 14.8 (92).

Sunbury's Brandon Kilty kicked two goals for Ballarat, while Darley's Jordan Spiteri was among the best.

Leading goalkickers for Ballarat were North City's Josh Bromley-Lynch and Redan's Blair Whelan with three goals each, while better players were Lake Wendouree's Hamish Morcom, Whelan, and North City's Jarryd Graham.

In netball, Bacchus Marsh duo Katie Williams and Noni McClure were the only two Eastern Bloc players who made the final Ballarat squad for its 49-47 defeat against Goulburn Valley.

Ballarat led by as many as three goals in the final quarter only to be overrun by a late Goulburn Valley burst.

"I don't think tiredness was the issue. I think we just made some incorrect decisions," interleague coach Jess MacGowan told the Ballarat Courier.

"When the game was there to be won, the girls panicked a bit. I think we were probably more level-headed when we were behind."

Darley's Ashby Keep and Bacchus Marsh's Jacinta Reid represented the Eastern Bloc teams in the under-18 netball match, which Ballarat lost 27-35.

Ballarat Football Netball League action returns this weekend with all senior football games starting at 2.15pm on Saturday.

Ballarat hosts Melton South, Melton hosts Redan, Bacchus Marsh hosts East Point and Darley hosts North Ballarat City while Lake Wendouree will play Sebastopol.
