MISSED opportunities haunted Darley as the Devils were eliminated by 16 points by Redan in Ballarat Football League finals action at the weekend.
Darley stretched the margin beyond three goals in the second quarter but were two points behind at half-time on the way to a 17.9 (111) to 14.11 (95) defeat.
Redan kicked out to an eight-point lead at the final change and held Darley at arm's length in the last quarter.
Darley's Jarrod Edwards kicked three goals and was among the best, while his Redan namesake was one of the Lions' best players.
Jake Edwards and Brent Dryden also kicked three goals for Darley. Gavin Miller was best for his role manning Redan's Edwards, while Brad Inglis was also busy in midfield.
Darley coach Gary Learmonth put the defeat down to Redan's better use of the ball and experience in big games.
"Our players never stopped trying. We served it up to Redan and were fantastic, really.
"They took their chances and had that bit of momentum at three-quarter-time. I thought our players were superb in the way they applied themselves, but Redan had that experience in winning finals."
Learmonth said his team had improved since last season.
With key players committing to next season and Learmonth also signed to continue as coach, the Devils are confident of keeping their playing list together and making summer additions.
"I think we could've won. We have shown over the past six weeks that, other than Ballarat, we matched it with the rest of the finals sides."
In netball, Darley's season was also ended by rival Bacchus Marsh.
The Cobras won 56-23 at Eastern Oval to advance to a second semi-final against East Point.
While East Point may have lost only one match for the season, Bacchus Marsh has earned the double chance. Should it fail to beat the Kangaroos, it will meet the winner of the first semi-final between Lake Wendouree and Redan.
