MELTON'S bowlers roared through Sunshine for just 59 in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west first XI at the weekend but got no opportunity to chase the runs.
Saturday's stormy weather denied Melton a batting innings of its own, the focus turning to a semi-final against Altona this weekend.
The weekend washouts have given Melton the upper hand should rain strike again, as it finished second ahead of third-placed Altona.
But having just had a good weekend's play wrecked by the weather, Melton coach Duncan Harrison isn't interested in a rain-out advancing his team to the final by default.
"The conditions were good when we started," Harrison said.
"There were a couple of good catches and a run out, we bowled really well."
Brad Jones (4-8), James Wheelahan (3-13) and Ash Sweet (2-10) all took good bowling figures out of the weekend match.
Altona inflicted Melton's only defeat of the home-and-away season back in November and December, skittling the home team for 75 at McPherson Park after setting it 129 for victory.
Harrison said even though the batting had failed in the last meeting, his bowlers also had to respect Altona's batsmen.
"We had a very bad day and we're keen to make amends," Harrison said.
"There were a lot of blokes that went in and [straight] out, we're looking for partnerships.
"James [Wheelahan] and [Ash] Sweet have both had terrific years. The good thing about our batting and bowling is that people contribute all the way through.
"If it's not Jonesy's day it might be Sweety's day."
First-placed Caulfield and fourth-placed Malvern will contest the other first XI semi-final, while Melton's second, third and fourth XI teams will all contest finals in the lower grades. "Last year, we had four sides make the grand final and it's been really good to follow it up," Harrison said.
"When you start the year with your planning you hope to do these sort of things."
Melton's second XI finished third and will play at Brighton, it was first in third XI and will host Altona, and was second in fourth XI and will host Williamstown.
