MELTON is on track to claim top spot in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west competition after it managed to restrict table-toppers Caulfield to 190 on day one of their two-day match at MacPherson Park Oval .
Strong wind and blistering heat meant Melton was set to face a difficult day with the ball, but some inspired bowling from Brad Jones, who managed 5-45, ensured the side remains a chance to secure a coup next week when the two sides meet again.
Ashley Sweet was also a key, picking up two wickets.
Melton coach Duncan Harrison said he was pleased with all of his bowlers.
"They were really difficult conditions to bowl in and I was happy with how well we played against such a strong opponent," Harrison said.
"They were 2-87 at tea, but we managed to get it to around 6-90 shortly after, which was really pleasing.
"I was pleased with all the bowlers.
"They worked really hard all day in what were challenging conditions."
Harrison is confident his side can go on to win the match, which he hopes will set it up perfectly for a solid finals campaign.
"We back our batting most weeks and we have a good batting group so I'm very confident we can go out there and do the business," the coach said.
"Any of our top six batsmen are capable of hitting 100s. If they take ownership of the match I'm sure we'll get the win.
"If we win, we'll go top and if we lose we can drop down to third, so we'll definitely go for it."
Harrison believes his side is benefiting from playing against the top team with only a few weeks to go before the semi- finals.
"It's good to play against good teams at this stage.
"There is such a good feeling around the place because there is such a good contest between us and Caulfield," he said.
"We had a frustrating time at the start of the season because of wash-outs, but we've gained momentum since Christmas.
"We will be in good form heading into the finals."
The match with Caulfield will recommence this Saturday
at MacPherson Park Oval at 1pm.
