A LOSING start would not deter Melton as three straight wins gave the young Lions momentum heading into the second week of under-15 Hatch Shield action.
Broadmeadows rolled Melton in the opening game of the west group last week, but Melton hit back with wins against Altona, Yarraville and Williamstown.
The Lions didn't have a single stand-out last Monday as they opened up the tournament with an eight-wicket defeat to Broadmeadows at MacPherson Park.
But Jake Charge produced a big game with bat and ball against Altona in game two to get Melton on the board and kick-start the team's campaign.
Charge took 4-26 after Melton sent Altona in and bowled its host out for 136 at Frank Kirk Oval.
Charge (41) and Jack Anderson (42) then top-scored as Melton reached the target with six wickets in hand.
Dylan Clarke took over with the ball as he claimed nine wickets in the next two games.
Clarke's 4-8 off eight overs limited Yarraville to 130 on Wednesday after the visitors to MacPherson Park had reached 2-70.
Melton made hard work of the chase, though, falling to 5-35 before Charge (57), Lachlan Watkins (17) and William Thorton-Gielen (18) got the Lions home with two wickets in hand.
Thorton-Gielen and Charge put on 40 for the ninth wicket in their match-winning stand.
The momentum rolled into a 36-run win against Williamstown in the week's final game, with Thorton-Gielen top-scoring from No.10 with 30 not out as Melton recovered from 6-61 to post 158.
Clarke then took 5-18 as Williamstown was bowled out for 122 in reply.
The Lions played Werribee yesterday and face Sunshine today. Semi-finals will be held on Sunday, preliminary finals on Thursday, January 26, and the final on Sunday, January 29.
