BACCHUS Marsh arrested a middle-order collapse to chase down Sunbury United and start the new year with an important win in the Gisborne District Cricket Association's McIntyre Cup at the weekend.
The Bulls overcame a 4-21 slump to reach 6-159 in reply to United's 154 all out to inflict the reigning premier's second defeat of the season.
Bacchus Marsh needed the points to hold its spot in fourth with 30 behind third-placed United on 33 and ahead of fifth-placed Rupertswood on 24.
The Bulls were 2-95 in the chase when Matt LaFranchi (44) went.
He was followed by captain Dennis O'Loughlin and James Bailey, who made ducks, then Scott Wakefield (34) who had been part of the 61-run partnership for the third wicket.
But Tom McColl (22no) and Bradley Nichols (20no) stopped Sunbury United from running through the batting card and guided the Bulls to victory in the 38th over.
United had been bowled out for 154 in the 40th over after reaching 2-90 then losing 7-64. O'Loughlin was best of the Bacchus Marsh bowlers with 3-35, while McColl took 2-35 and Sam Bowman 2-15.
