Widows still depend on Legacy's promise

31 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM

MOORABOOL residents are being urged to dig deep this week for the annual Legacy Week appeal.

Tokens, wristbands, pens and other items will be available at the Coles shopping centre until Friday. Prices range from $2 to $50.

Bacchus Marsh RSL president Stan Franklin said Legacy, formed in 1923, was dedicated to caring for the families of deceased veterans.

"It was established by the men who returned from the war as a promise to look after the widows of men who didn't come back from the war," he said.

Bacchus Marsh RSL collected $2000 during Legacy Week last year.

"The Bacchus Marsh community is very generous," Mr Franklin said.

"I am hoping they will help us this year, too.

There are 91 widows in Bacchus Marsh aged from 80-90, and Mr Franklin says they have already lost a great deal. "It's our duty as a nation to look after them.

"When you see the volunteers in the shopping centre selling the Legacy badges, please buy one because the money really does go to a good cause."
