ENVIRONMENTALIST Gavin Webber is encouraging people to knock on the green door.
He will be opening his family home on 57 Argyll Circuit, Melton, between 10am and 4pm on September 12 for Sustainable House Day.
Now in its ninth year, the event showcases innovative homes and shares environmentally friendly lifestyle ideas.
It's the first time Melton residents will be able to visit a local house for free.
Mr Webber says it's a great opportunity for people to learn from other peoples' personal experience and practical
examples.
"People think it's too hard. But they can come along to see the simple things they can do, too."
Changes he has made to his house include retrofitting solar panels and solar hot water systems, which have reduced the need to buy electricity and natural gas by between 75 and 100per cent.
While they initially cost $20,000 and $2100 respectively, the panels are near to paying for themselves after only a few years since installation.
Smaller improvements included planting a 'food forest' of organic vegetable patches and a fruit orchard on his 778-square-metre block.
"It's a normal, older-style suburban block, but it gives us 50per cent of our food."
Rain tanks supply a steady stream of water and hens lay several eggs a day, while Mr Webber also makes preserves, cheeses and soap at home.
He and other members of the Melton Sustainable Living Group will answer questions and offer tips on the day.
"There is nothing quite like going to the house of someone who has done it. We are just normal people so it's possible for anyone," Mr Webber says. "I'm hoping people will be inspired to try at least one thing. Once they do they'll never go back."
