ONE hundred years ago escapologist and showman Harry Houdini performed one of his greatest acts when he took to the sky in a flimsy biplane. It is claimed that on March 18, 1910, Houdini became the first man in Australia to make a powered, controlled and sustained flight.

This week Melton will celebrate the historic aviation event with a three-day Festival of Flight. Glyn Butchard, standing under a DC3 that will be part of the airshow, is among those organising the event.

Its great that Mel is celebrating this in such a grand scale. It should be a wonderful event to see and a big thanks to Glyn Butchard for all his hard work and effort.

I was deeply impressed to be at the official celebration of the first controlled flight anywhere in Australia, celebrating 100 years since the world famous Harry Houdini flew his aircraft at Diggers Rest. A

s was stated by a number of people there, this was a truly historic event and yet one which the rest of the world has tended to ignore. Like the other world smashing event at Aireys' Inlet by one Nicolas Marconi. The people of the great Shire of Melton should be very proud that this great historic event occured on their turf, and their Council and historical society, partnered by the great Lions Club of Diggers Rest, should be very proud of their part in this great commemoration.
