MELTON is still waiting for more shops two years after being promised an expansion of Woodgrove shopping centre.
In September 2008, Melton Council approved a master plan to double the size of the centre, extending onto the vacant land between the existing building and Barries Road.
It was to include two discount department stores, a supermarket and a range of other shops, additional car parking and a new bus interchange.
Mayor Justin Mammarella said last week he was disappointed works had not yet started, while the town's population was rapidly increasing. "I would like to see it constructed. The sooner it's done the better."
He said the council was in discussion with owners QIC to ensure the development went ahead. "I have heard it for a long time that the residents are very keen to see more shopping options. [Business] should be responsive to the requests given by its loyal customers."
Cr Mammarella said it was important that residents realised the council was not responsible for what shops were constructed in Melton. "It's private enterprise. All we can do is continually lobby the developers."
QIC project director Andrew Lannen said it would continue to work with council on the project.
"QIC is a long-term investor in the Melton region and our planned development of the centre is evidence of our strong belief in the future of the area," he said.
He could not say when the development might go ahead.
The council is also considering a proposal from the owners of Caroline Springs Square shopping centre for further expansion after the construction of several new shops.
