MELTON residents can learn how to access low-cost solar energy at free information sessions in the shire this month.
The sessions aim to show residents how they can take advantage of the federal government's solar panel bulk-buy scheme, which allows them to purchase solar power from $2995 and solar hot water from $2300.
Melton mayor Justin Mammarella said the sessions would help residents save money and reduce water and energy use.
"It's an excellent initiative which helps people identify energy-saving opportunities around the home," Cr Mammarella said.
"This is an ideal chance for anyone who missed out on the last solar rebate to take advantage of low-cost solar energy."
Melton resident David Suttie, who installed solar roof panels last May, recommended the scheme even though he is yet to receive a rebate.
"There was a lot of bureaucracy involved in getting my panels set up, but I'm saving a lot of money now," Mr Suttie said. "I spoke to a real estate agent the other day and he said my property's value has increased by about $10,000."
The first session is at Caroline Springs Leisure Centre on Friday, with a second at the Caroline Springs library on May 21. The final session is at the Melton Community Hall on Monday, May 31.
