Melton project to ease traffic squeeze

31 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
MELTON mayor Justin Mammarella says the duplication of one of Melton's busiest roads will ease traffic congestion and improve road safety.

Works on the duplication of Centenary Avenue from Coburns Road to Palmerston Street began on January 9 and will include construction of a new east-bound carriageway, taking in part of the current service road.

Cr Mammarella said the start of works on the $3.8 million project followed extensive consultation with residents, Mowbray College and other stakeholders.

"The project is required to address increasing traffic volumes on Centenary Avenue, road safety and the issue of congestion around Mowbray College, particularly at school times."

The project includes a partial reconstruction and asphalt overlay of the existing west-bound carriageway.

Other works include improvements to underground drainage, car crossing and footpath, bicycle and parking lanes, public lighting, signage and line marking.

Work is due for completion in June.

A council spokesman said road users should allow extra travel time while works continue, particularly during school pick-up and drop-off periods.
