'Killer bridge' menace reined in

POLICE will launch a speed blitz on Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road, close to the crossing once known as the "killer bridge".

VicRoads last year completed a $2.1million upgrade of the bridge over Djerriwarrh Creek after a number of deaths in recent years.

Inspector Greg Payne, of Melton police, said they had been targeting the area and detected some high speeds that led to cars being impounded.

"As a result of the rehabilitation of the bridge area by VicRoads, a reduction in speed limits and the collisions that have occurred, we are specifically targeting the area to reduce the incidence of speeding and road trauma in partnership with VicRoads."

VicRoads regional director Nial Finegan said although the section of road was now safer, drivers were still responsible for safety on the state's roads.

Diggers Rest–Coimadai Road is a two-lane, two-way rural road with a poor safety record, including three fatal crashes and nine serious-injury crashes since 2003.

The upgrade included widening the bridge over Djerriwarrh Creek and the road through the valley, resurfacing the road, improving signs and barriers, and improving visibility of the road and surrounds for drivers.

"Road safety along Diggers Rest–Coimadai Road is of concern to VicRoads, Victoria Police and the community, and we are working together to make sure that people travelling through this area arrive at their destination safely," Mr Finegan said.

"The combined approach of engineering, education and enforcement will hopefully see an end to serious crashes."

He said that to further improve safety, Victoria Police and VicRoads would patrol the area to ensure drivers were following road rules.

Drivers who speed or break the road rules can expect to be caught and fined.
