Hail, storm cause havoc

09 Mar, 2010 10:44 AM
WESTERN Suburbs United Churches Cricket Club president Michael Scilini keeps water out of the club rooms at Mt Carbery Reserve, Melton South, after the flash flooding on the weekend.

SES crews responded to 130 calls on Saturday alone after freak thunderstorms lashed the area and played havoc with weekend sport.

SES teams were bracing for another round of call-outs yesterday as holiday makers returned from the long weekend.

Melton SES crew member David Warren said Saturday's hail had smashed skylights and windows across the region but the largest number of call-outs were for flooding.

"Most of the water damage was due to gutters that just couldn't cope and in some cases it was because they hadn't been cleaned out."

He said the hail had also shredded trees and scattered huge amounts of leaf matter and urged people to be vigilant in cleaning up after the storm.
