Blame swapped over bypass traffic

16 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
MELTON Shire Council and VicRoads are yet to agree on who should fix the traffic problem on either side of the Deer Park bypass.

The Express Telegraph last week reported that residents are being delayed for up to half an hour at peak times each day because there's only a single lane, Christies Road, leading from Caroline Springs to the bypass.

The council and VicRoads this week again blamed each other, with VicRoads metropolitan north-west regional director Nial Finegan saying Christies Road was a local road and the council was responsible for it.

But council planning and development general manager Luke Shannon said the congestion on Christies Road was due to the intersection of the

Western Highway and Caroline Springs Boulevard.

"This intersection is part of the road network managed by VicRoads, which is aware

of the issues and is now reviewing the options available to it to ease congestion."

Mr Finegan said VicRoads was "happy to work with the council to explore any improvements on Christies Road".

The principal of nearby Caroline Springs College, Patrick Wearing, said the school's three campuses in Caroline Springs had not been affected by the congestion during peak times.

"It's a lot earlier in the day than the school traffic at 8.30am, so we're outside that timeframe."
